Molly's Old Story
Molly's Message
Education is important! There are many kinds of education, Molly says. "The most important are the teachings that our grandparents taught us. It is important to teach our younger children these things. The teachings will help to keep them on the right path. It's important not to change the teachings but to keep them as close to the original as possible. Older people know how important these teachings are and they will always help you."
Molly says, "The key to success for young people is to keep them involved with the community. They need to understand what community support means, how to give it, and how to become part of the community and to work for the people. If we really try hard, we will bring back our culture and our language."
School education is important too, Molly says. "We made sure all our kids graduated grade twelve, and some went on to college. Leo wanted to see his grandkids graduate. When you have an education, you know where to turn. With an education, you are not one of the ones who have nothing."
It is possible to live traditionally and in the modern world, Molly says. "It helps people know who they are, and you can stress who you are!"
"With an education, you will always have a job. All of my kids finished high school and all of them are working," Molly stated proudly. "Two of them will be teachers, one is working for the government, and another is working in the Welfare department. There is a future with an education." But for Molly, education means more than just academics. "Learn about both cultures to live successfully as an Indian." Molly's words emphasized that this is the core of a good life.
Molly says that her children have learned to live more fully, thanks to both kinds of education. Molly states, "When kids have a good education, they learn to listen. They learn to respect and understand what it is that you are saying."
